Competition On - Regatta

Boys competed well. Jacob and Reuben made it passed the first round. Then Reuben made it passed two more rounds. Wound up losing in the den championship to the boat that defeated Jacob earlier.

Cub Scouts At National Building Museum

It was a special cub scout day at the museum. All these areas set up to build things. Faith took Jacob's place today because he is sick.  But, Faith and Reuben really liked it. 

Cub Scouts Hike At Huntley Meadows Park

On the heels of our basketball game was a cub scouts hike at a Fairfax County park just 10 miles from DC.  It was another world!  A wetlands created some 40 years ago by generations of beavers.

We took a good hike around and through the wetlands.  The kids were on a semi scavenger hunt trying to locate lots of things along the hike.  I think our cylce was maybe 1.5 miles, but it certainly tired the kids out.

Happy Father's Day

Great Day... woke up to some nice gifts, including the IOU for a new grill. We even went to Home Depot after a nice breakfast at IHOP. Then later we met up with our cub scout pack at the Nationals Game. A very fun time despite the loss. The kids and I even got to run the bases... sorry no Mommies allowed on Father's Day :-)

Rain Gutter Regatta

Right after Faith's ballet, the boys and I rushed over to cub scouts for the annual rain gutter regatta. The kids made their boats (with my help) over the last few days. Mostly just some measuring, gluing, and painting. The boats performed pretty well. Reuben made it to the Tiger finals by winning his two heats. He lost in the finals... a blow out (pun intended). Jacob lost his first heat, but won decidedly in the second heat. Best of all they had a lot of fun with it!

Sunday Wrap Up

Last basketball game of the season. Good season even through we never won a game. The last few (except for last week) have been close and exciting. Reuben is really playing well and Jacob is getting close to bringing it all together.

Right after basketball we had cub scouts. First the boys made scrapbooks and then did a team building obstacle course... I'll let you watch.

Pinewood Derby Results

The race was last week, but just now finally getting a chance to post the results. It was a chilling couple of hours of racing! Reuben was in the first three heats of the day and took each race by gigantic margins. So big that the judges inspected his car. Spinnings his wheels, looking it over, and passing it around. Unfortunately in the next round he got beat 2 out of 3 and was out. I think all the handling misaligned his wheels some or more sinister was some kind of sabotage. I would say it was an anti-semitic conspiracy, but its a Jewish Cub Scout troop; so that makes it somewhat unlikely. Anyway Reuben was happy with his result.

Jacob's car also did well. In his first round he took 1 out of the 3 heats. he didn't advance but had a good showing. They both won awards. Reuben won best contrasting paint job. Jacob won best stripes. :-)

Jacob's car is silver with orange lightning bolt. Reuben's is silver in the back with the "fire" along the side.

Pinewood Derby Cars Taking Shape

Next Sunday is our troop's race. The kids cars are taking shape. Last week sanded and put on a base paint. Today we detailed it. Our pack's rule for 1st graders is now sawing or drilling, so we were left to just sand in order to shape the cars. Reuben and Jacob had bold plans of what wood to sand away. I'd advised them to minimize it because it was a lot of work, but no they were pretty adamant on their designs... That is until they started sanding :-) Quickly we decided to rethink things and concentrate on rounding the corners on the front! Pretty quick we all thought that was good enough!
Unfortunately I think we are going to be about 0.1-0.2 oz too heavy. So I will need to sand off some more from the bottom to make the weight of a 5oz. max.




In other news, the amaryllis flower sent from my parents has bloomed today! Pretty amazing flower to watch grow over the last few weeks.
