Circuits 101

Kids playing with this cool little circuits kit.  Jacob started on experiment #2 putting a fan in series with a switch.  We then experimented with adding a light in parallel and in series.  Jacob explained why the fan was slower and light dimmer when together in series than alone.  Pretty sure he understood why no current went through lightbulb when added in parallel. 
Reuben of course started at experiment #49 which introduced a diode with led and two switches in parallel.  Of course it would light the led when the switches were off which was counterintuitive to Reuben. Good circuit to explain parallel and series circuits.  We then switched the direction of the diode to show it works, but I think that fell flat on Reuben. 

Now we are building a reflection detector with a photo resistor. This one is tough :-)

Took the scenic route back from Germantown, MD.  Over the Potomac on Whites Ferry to Leesburg.  Was working great until traffic near Dulles.

Pre-Spring Cleanup

Finally got a Saturday to whittle down the todo list.  Today we added some shelving units to the garage. Pretty nice units and easy to assemble. 9 feet of five shelves.  Hmm how fast will they fill up.

Nursing Home

Tipper had a small mass removed on her eyelid today. She is not a happy camper tonight.
Jacob is finally getting better, but will still miss school tomorrow and thus the whole week.  He has lost about 10% of his body weight over the course of this illness.  I've promised to take him out to eat his choice for a breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Need to fatten him up good.

Happy Valentine's Day

Jacob is feeling better today after starting antibiotics for strep.  Back to school tomorrow.

Bedtime

Storytime with Jacob. He is already asleep with a fever.  Came on just after Hebrew school and he missed the basketball game.  Reuben played in the game and played very well.  Highlight was his fast break down the court ending in a nice layup.

This picture here is with my new Droid X phone.  Best Buy replaced both Karen's and my phones this week.  We had insurance on our old droids. And after a month of trying to repair Karen's they finally replaced it.  Meanwhile I put in for a new battery which you are allowed one per year with the insurance. But the company sent first a battery that was under powered as compared to the OEM and couldn't recharge once depleted.  Then the sent me one that was for another model.  Instead of getting me the new battery, $10 on amazon, karen asked best buy to give me a new phone too.  And they did no problem. 

Its pretty nice.
